Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A query typed into a search box is sent to the independent provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the entry and supplies its results. Shelby County Criminal History does not keep or log those search terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email or other direct message may be retained long enough to respond and maintain related records. It is not shared outside the organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Normal server and analytics logs can collect technical details about a visit:
- Device IP address
- Browser type and version
- Operating system and device category
- Pages viewed and time spent
- Referring website, when available
- Date and time of each request
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies and analytics services help measure traffic, popular pages, and site performance. A browser can reject or remove cookies, although some functions may then behave differently.
What We Do With This Data
- Operate and improve website speed and availability
- Route a submitted query to the selected partner
- Measure how visitors use individual pages
- Diagnose security or technical faults
- Support advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Shelby County Criminal History does not maintain, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to the Shelby County Sheriff, Eighteenth Judicial Circuit courts, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency CJIS repository, and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sex Offender Registry. Visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report or a record about another person, and this website is not a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies power the search tools. A partner's own privacy policy governs data submitted to its service, including retention and disclosure. Review that policy before entering a query because this policy does not control the partner's processing.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to the Shelby County Sheriff, court systems, Alabama agencies, legal resources, or outside search providers. The destination's policy governs once a visitor leaves this website. Advertising providers may also use their own systems to measure activity across sites.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:
- Search partners that process a visitor's chosen query
- Analytics vendors that measure traffic and performance
- Advertising networks that place or evaluate ads
- Government or law-enforcement bodies responding to valid legal process
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable, commonly used safeguards protect information in our control. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, so a breach or unauthorized access can never be ruled out completely.
Users Under 18
The service is intended for adults and does not knowingly seek personal information from anyone under 18. Data identified as belonging to a minor will be removed when a valid request establishes the issue.
Your Data Rights
Rights can vary by residence and applicable law. Alabama's Open Records Act, principally Alabama Code §36-12-40, governs access to public writings held by government and does not turn this private website's visitor logs into county records. Alabama Code §15-20A-8 separately controls public registry dissemination and misuse. Subject to the law that applies, a visitor may:
- Request a copy of personal data held about them
- Ask that inaccurate data be corrected
- Request deletion when retention is not required
- Opt out of processing where an applicable law provides that choice
Updates to This Policy
This policy may be revised. A new version becomes available on this page with its updated effective date, so visitors should review it periodically.
